printer jam

Printer Jam is a publication that highlights the three-year Graphic Design program at Dawson College. The book offers a glimpse into the student experience, what they learn, create, and overcome, as well as a brief introduction to the instructors who guide them along the way.

BRIEF This project captures the student journey throughout Dawson College’s Graphic Design program. Presented in booklet form, the publication aims to inform future students about what to expect across the three years, while sharing authentic, relatable experiences from the classroom and studio.

IDEATION One of the most common challenges faced by design students is dealing with printers. This frustrating (yet universal for graphic designers) experience served as the foundation for the book’s concept. The goal was to take that shared struggle and reframe it with a lighthearted, nostalgic twist; something that feels both real and memorable.

SOLUTION Building on the printer jam theme, the book also references other technical hurdles students frequently encounter, such as CMYK/RGB misalignments and imposition errors. These problems were intentionally woven into the design narrative. The title Printer Jam plays with dual meaning: referencing both a literal printing error and a sweet, jam-like marmalade. This is reflected visually on the cover. Inside, the concept continues with playful design choices such as intentionally misaligned text, layered colour margins, and imposed elements that mirror the technical quirks of print production. The result is a tactile, engaging book that captures the creative chaos, humor, and growth students experience during the program.
